DUODENAL VERSUS GASTRIC FEEDING IN MEDICAL INTENSIVE CARE UNIT PATIENTS: A PROSPECTIVE,RANDOMIZED,CL PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 29 July 2009

Hsu CW et al

About this article:"Duodenal feeding is a recommended strategy  to decrease VAP  in comparison to gastric feeding. One of the rationales for this is the potential decrease  in gastroesophageal reflux that may lead to increased oropharyngeal  colonization and VAP. In this randomized trial ICU patients were randomized to one or other stratregy of feeding. Interestingly, the patients fed  via duodenum received more calories, had less vomiting and  a decreased number of VAPs. In critically ill patients an effort should be done  for administering feeding via nasoduodenal tubes "

About this article: "In  recent years several new agents against Gram-positive cocci, specially S.aureus MR and MS,  are under investigation. Iclaprim from the family of the diaminopyrimidines  is a novel  antibiotic against resistant Gram positive infections including S.aureus. It is available in IV and oral form and it is currently tested in health care and ventilator-associated pneumonia"

DORIPENEM:POSITION IN CLINICAL PRACTICE PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 29 July 2009

Dedhia HV et al

About this article:"The new antibiotic armamentarium against Gram-negative bacteria is really scanty. Doripenem is a new carbapenem with a broad spectrum that includes anaerobes and Gram-negative bacteria  and also active in front of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. A recent randomized trial has demonstrated its clinical efficacy in VAP when compared to imipenem. Doripenem is an effective antibiotic for the treatment of late VAP or early VAP with risk factors for multidrug resistant bacteria"

Burgess DS

About this article:"A review manuscript on the antibiotic treatment of VAP. Specifically, it is focussed on  different strategies to minimize resistance development including shortening the duration of treatment. In addition, it reviews pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic parameters to be taken into account when choosing different antibiotics"

Wednesday, 29 July 2009

DiCocco JM et al

About this article:"This manuscript is a review article  that summarizes the current strategies of  diagnosis and treatment of VAP. Authors point out the importance of bacteriological diagnosis. The importance of periodical surveillance in ordern to know the responsible pathogens and the pattern of resistances is recommended. The value of this strategy is controversial"
